Not very often am i ashamed of being Dutch. Normally i sweep aside compliments of how tidy it always is here, or how wonderful it is that everyone speaks English, and the tolerance noticed by people from abroad is something the Dutch pr department can be very proud of. I suppose. But this morning i woke up to a country i don't know. A country i don't want to be living in anymore... Tolerance? Pah... Tidy? Well.... Fear has definitely taken over...
The elections have shown this country to be scared, looking inwards, much more than us lefties have ever thought possible. Indeed an eye opener, and indeed something to be taken very seriously. I looked up the results for the group of villages that i come from, and the party of Geert Wilders had won... Even beat the rightwing-liberals that normally do well there, even the Christian Democrats, and Labour did as badly as they always do there; here in Roosendaal the first two were neck 'n neck, other towns show similar results...
Someone on telly mentioned a few days back, when someone else was trying to promote the party that has now become the biggest (ever in their history) to be the best at solving the economic crisis, that it would seem ironic that the party that has promoted greed and self-serving should have a stab at turning the economy back onto calmer waters and encourage us all to look after each other... He was a baffled at the way most people here appear to think as i am this morning... The country has spoken...
