- running up to Christmas -

what with all the snow that's falling here, the Christmas spirit is well and truly under way...
Tonight is the play - twice - which for me used to always be the replacement for the church visit i felt obliged to go to but never really enjoyed after i was 15. Now I'm in it, there's a different feeling, still good and fairly sacred, but also fun and the release after the last song will be tremendous, but so very worth it. And as long as i don't feel anywhere near as petrified as last year, for the first play of the evening, i might actually enjoy myself...

Christmas has always been a bit double for me, especially since i came to England and got to know the carnavalesque atmosphere that hangs over the country. So very different from the serious, quiet, sober affair it was back in Holland, my family anyway. I loved the contrast to begin with, but over the years, it also began to feel more and more empty, pointless almost. And the way it's celebrated in the Steiner school, with a mixture of fun and sober, happiness and seriousness, to me feels the nicest - being spiritual about Christmas doesn't have to mean that religion takes over. It's alright to think about others who might not have the chance to gorge, or have a roof over their heads. But it's also fine to enjoy yourself, and have your friends and family around. As long as it doesn't become rediculous...

Happy holidays, all!!!

oh, one that we'll definitely be watching this year:
